Cyclone Freddy could be the longest lasting tropical cyclone on record
Cyclone Freddy, which crossed the Indian Ocean over a span of more than five weeks, causing severe damage and destruction in its path, has resulted in the death of more than 500 people in Malawi, Mozambique and Madagascar. The World Meteorological Organization is setting up an expert committee to evaluate whether tropical cyclone Freddy has broken the record as the longest-lasting tropical cyclone on record. Meteorologists suggest that climate change contributed to the intensity of Freddy. As the global temperature continues to rise, warmer ocean temperatures fuel the intensity of tropical storms and hurricanes.
