Saving the Great Indian Bustard

The Great Indian Bustard is on the brink of extinction with only 150 of these birds still left (out of which 122 are in Jaisalmer). Till 1980s, the number was 1500-2000.The bird also falls in the ‘Critically Endangered’ category of the IUCN Red List

To address the extinction of the Great Indian Bustard, a committee constituted under the aegis of the Supreme Court suggested that 800 kms (10%) of the proposed power lines in the Thar and Kutch deserts of Rajasthan and Gujarat should be rerouted or made to go underground. The petition to save the Great Indian Bustard from powerlines and development projects was fled in the Supreme Court in 2019.
