Sikkim: 100% organic
Sikkim is the only Indian state with 100% organic farming activities. The state achieved this goal in 2016 and has continued to be on the organic track for the past many years. Starting this transition in 2003, all the farming activities of the state are done without any unnatural or chemical interference. The state has also banned the use and sale of chemical pesticides and fertilizers. In 2018, Sikkim also won the United Nations’ Food and Agriculture Organisation’s (FAO) Future Policy Gold award. The announcement with the award mentioned “Sikkim is the first organic state in the world. All of its farmland is certified organic. At the same time, Sikkim’s approach reaches beyond organic production and has proven truly transformational for the state and its citizens.” Parallel with this, the number of tourists has drastically increased in the state as between 2014 to 2017 the state witnessed a jump of 50% more tourist visits. Organic farming, pleasant weather and beautiful landscape have helped Sikkim in getting more tourism.
