The Great Invasion

The Great Invasion

In the long history of march of civilisation, humans have made terrible mistakes knowingly or unknowingly but one mistake which stands out and is generally given less attention is transporting animals and plants from one part of the world to another. To some, it might not even sound like a mistake, after all, what’s wrong with this? Little did we know that by doing this, we will create a Frankenstein’s monster for the planet. These animal and plant species have the capability of becoming Invasive Alien Species. Once established, some Invasive alien species can displace native plant and animal species, disrupt nutrient and fire cycles and cause changes in the pattern of plant succession. According to the Convention for Biological Diversity, invasive alien species are the second largest cause of biodiversity loss in the world, posing a greater threat to native biodiversity than pollution, harvest, and disease combined.
